Nine Services, One Bench in South Delhi

Nine services cover most of what a watch or clock needs, from a battery replacement to an antique movement stripped and rebuilt. You do not have to know which one applies to your piece. Bring it in, describe the fault, and the free estimate will name it for you.

Start with what it is doing

Symptoms point to services. A watch that has simply stopped often needs a battery replacement, nothing more. One that runs but gains or loses badly, or sounds rough, is usually asking for a service and overhaul: the movement cleaned, worn parts replaced, oils renewed. A specific broken thing, a snapped winding stem or a jammed hand, falls under watch repair. Cosmetic faults have their own answers. A cracked or scratched glass means crystal replacement. A faded, stained or flaking face means dial refinishing. A worn or broken band means strap replacement. Engraving is the one service people ask for when nothing is wrong at all.

Clocks ask a different question

With clocks the dividing line is age and condition. A piece that still runs, chimes and keeps reasonable time wants clock repair and maintenance: adjustment, cleaning, a fault put right, the beat set. A piece that has been silent for years, or has lost parts, or has a case coming apart, is antique clock restoration, which is slower and more involved. Grandfather and longcase clocks, mantel clocks and cuckoo clocks are all handled. If you cannot tell which side of that line your clock sits on, you are not meant to. That is what the estimate is for.

Inside the case

What you are actually handing over.

A mechanical watch is a power source, a gear train and a governor, built to tolerances measured in hundredths of a millimetre. Dried oil in any one of these places wears metal that cannot be un-worn.

1Crown & stem
Winds the mainspring and sets the hands. The commonest route for water to get in.
2Mainspring barrel
Stores the power. A tired or set mainspring is why a watch stops early.
3Gear train
Steps that power down through four wheels into an even, usable rate.
4Escapement
Releases the train one beat at a time. This is the ticking you can hear.
5Balance wheel
Oscillates against a hairspring and decides whether the watch keeps time.
6Jewel bearings
Synthetic ruby. They cut friction where a steel pivot would grind itself away.

Free estimate, then you decide
